The militarization of Washington, D.C.: distraction, intimidation, and Donald Trump's authoritarian obsession

Donald Trump's decision to militarize Washington, D.C., as well as other cities across the United States, should not be underestimated. This new move by Trump is not merely an exaggerated act of public policy in response to what he characterizes as uncontrollable violence in certain cities, as well as an improper use of taxpayer money on measures not supported by any electoral mandate, much less by the country's Constitution.
These decisions raise the possibility of a series of objectives that must be carefully observed and analyzed by all citizens and the various independent organizations of Democrats and Republicans, as well as even by the leadership of those political parties.
There is no doubt that the psychotic need to feed his ego, his paranoid delusions, and his boundless narcissism are satisfied by the pleasure he derives from the sadism and malignity of Donald Trump's actions. These factors are decisive in his mental processes and in the character he embodies in his public life, both when examining his murky past and, above all, his actions as President of the United States.
It is perhaps uncomfortable to acknowledge, from a theoretical perspective, that the person who holds the position of president, particularly of the United States, does not conduct himself in a neutral state of mind, or in a vacuum with respect to the elements that define his personality. These elements transcend the subjective entity to become a concrete component of reality that society, and politics, must analyze and confront when considering the consequences of the exercise of power by certain individuals.
On the other hand, the measures adopted by Trump reveal his objectives and those of the far-right faction of the Republican Party (GOP) that supports him. It is evident that the immediate military occupation of Washington, DC, aims to distract the country's attention from the following events:
- The genocide of the Palestinians by Benjamin Netanyahu, with the collaboration of the United States and European indifference;
- Putin and Trump's conspiracy to conveniently seize Ukraine's mineral resources after eliminating the Ukrainian population, or at least subjugating it to Russia's authoritarian regime through various mechanisms, the main one being Ukraine's exclusion from NATO;
- The harmful effects on civil rights, and on the agricultural and commercial economy, of the persecution of Hispanics and other immigrants (without even considering their legal status in the country);
- The inflationary process, coupled with the economic stagnation process, places immense pressure on families with limited economic resources or living in poverty;
- Trump's ties to Jeff Epstein and his illegal offshoot structure, which could have been, and still may be, far more toxic and corrupt than those known to date.
But Trump's aims behind the mobilization of the National Guard may be even more ambitious and tyrannical, aimed at definitively establishing himself as an autocrat or dictator through physical and spatial control of the nerve center of the federal government and the nation, as Hitler did in Germany and, more recently, Hugo Chávez in Venezuela.
Making people believe that the United States capital is under absolute threat of criminal violence (which is false according to current statistics) is only the first level of a more complex discourse, in the event that Trump adds as one of his objectives, which we can expect him to do in the not too distant future, the protection of the federal capital from an “imminent” insurrection by internal enemies (“enemies within”).
By adding the military presence in other American cities to his previous actions since becoming president, Trump is laying the factual foundation for his pronouncements, and those of his administration, aimed at promoting the American people's acceptance of the imposition of his authoritarian aspirations.
In this context, and given MAGA's tenets, there is no reason to doubt that the purpose of Trump and his council of psychopathic thugs is to make "hegemonic" the false perception of reality with which they seek to justify the exclusion of all dissent, the total rejection of ethnic and gender diversity, and the violation of citizens' civil rights.
The widespread acceptance of his rhetoric would allow Trump, in the absence of any effective opposition, to complete his takeover of all state institutions and agencies, not only as a result of illegal administrative orders based on his reactionary strategy, but also through the intimidation and collective anxiety that the deployment of the National Guard in every state will provoke.
It is plausible to anticipate Trump's desire to perpetuate himself in power (directly or indirectly, as a behind-the-scenes puppet master) through an illegitimate presidency, rooted in intimidation, and through the cancellation of elections (both those for the selection of a new Congress, scheduled for November 2026, and the presidential elections of 2028), or at least by passing off the results of fraudulent elections as valid, as Hitler and Chávez did.
Of course, Trump's recent actions are not only responding to his interest in retaining power for himself, but also to the continuity of the group of officials inspired by authoritarianism, who not only accompany him but also use him in their attempt to destroy democracy and the return to the practice in international politics of dividing the planet and its resources by expansionist and authoritarian powers.
Given this situation, the challenge and serious responsibility facing the institutions of the democratic system, as well as those who hold various positions in the judiciary, the remnants of honest public service in the executive branch, Congress, and even the high-ranking officers of the complex structure of the nation's Armed Forces, are evident. It is their responsibility to analyze the measures within the existing legal framework, despite being under siege, in the face of a traitor to democracy and the United States who, in this case, managed to occupy the nation's presidency through means that are secretly acknowledged to have been fraudulent.
The American people, those who still believe in democracy as an essential principle of the United States, and the so-called minorities who enrich it with their diversity, their culture, and their intellectuals, must move on to political mobilization, to the peaceful exercise of their rights, and not give in to the intimidation that this paranoid Donald Trump seeks to impose as part of his unhealthy exercise of power, and in rejection of the great values of American democracy.
